A church featuring an interior inspired by Kosiv ceramics is set to open in the Carpathian region

In the town of Kosiv in the Carpathian region, work is underway on a project to decorate a church in the unique artistic style of Kosiv painted ceramics. Students from the Carpathian National University will develop the sketches for the future interior. The initiative aims to combine the traditional folk art of Hutsulshchyna with a modern sacred space.

Yuriy Ploskonos, chairman of the Kosiv City Council, shared this information with media representatives.

“We have an unfinished UGCC church, and we want to decorate it in the style of Kosiv ceramics to promote this element of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. To this end, we have signed a memorandum with the Department of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University. We will receive draft designs as early as October,” Ploskonos said.

He added that the idea to design the church’s interior in the style of Kosiv ceramics belongs to Iryna Dundyak, a professor in the Department of Design and Theory at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University. The sketches will be submitted by students from this university.

“We will select the best sketches together with the church community and decorate the church to make it unique. We believe this will become an additional tourist attraction for us,” says Ploskonos.

According to him, the UGCC church was built in downtown Kosiv back in the early 2000s. However, the community ran out of funds to decorate the church’s interior after a fire at another UGCC church, which had to be rebuilt.

“Consequently, construction in the city center came to a halt. I think that through joint efforts, we will get this moving again,” noted the mayor of Kosiv.

Funds for the church’s interior, designed in the style of Kosiv ceramics, are expected to come from the local budget and through partnerships, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
