A film about a pickpocket without a smartphone shown at TIFF — The Verge
At the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, starring John Turturro, was screened. The film tells the story of Harry, an elderly pickpocket who does not understand smartphones, does not know what USB is, and complains that people are carrying cash less and less often. At the same time, he continues to make money through theft and care for his sick wife.
A crypto device and a risky theft
In the story, Harry accidentally steals a crypto device from the wrong person, after which he finds himself at the center of a tense story that puts the people around him in danger. As The Verge reports, the film features many shots of busy streets and crowded New York subway trains, while Turturro's performance is a central component of the picture.
The review's author noted that Turturro's character is a criminal, but at the same time evokes sympathy from the viewer. In one scene, Harry steals candy from a child. The Only Living Pickpocket in New York is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 30.

On the first day of the festival, the reviewer also watched Ryusuke Hamaguchi's drama All of a Sudden, set in France and Japan. It is the story of a chance encounter between Marie-Lou, the director of a nursing home, played by Virginie Efira, and playwright Marie, played by Tao Okamoto. The women spend the night talking about the impact of capitalism, care for elderly people, and their own lives. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on November 25.
Other projects presented included the six-episode Netflix series Below, starring Josh Hartnett, about a mysterious creature terrorizing a fishing village in Newfoundland. TIFF also screened Duncan Jones' animated satirical science-fiction film Rogue Trooper and the drama How We Stand about three sisters who were separated after their mother's death.
