A petition requesting that People's Artist Stepan Giza be posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine has gathered the required 25,000 signatures and is now set to be reviewed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This was reported on the petition website.

The author of the petition, Galina Papazova, notes that the award will help to honor the memory of the artist, “whose contribution to the spiritual resilience of the nation is commensurate with the highest state award.”

The petition highlights Stepan Giga’s significant and long-standing contribution to the development and popularization of Ukrainian culture, as well as to the formation and affirmation of national identity.

“For nearly half a century, Stepan Petrovych’s creative work was dedicated to serving Ukrainian song. His music strengthened national consciousness and fostered a love for the homeland, the Ukrainian language, and the Ukrainian people,” the petition states.

The author adds that during a period when Ukrainian pop music faced systematic suppression and the dominance of Russian-language cultural products, Stepan Giga proved that it is possible to create popular and competitive pop songs in the Ukrainian language that gain nationwide recognition and sell in the millions.

As a reminder, on Friday, December 12, renowned Ukrainian singer Stepan Giga passed away in Lviv at the age of 67.
