Clive Davis, the producer who introduced Whitney Houston to the world, has died

American music producer Clive Davis, who helped launch the careers of many global stars and headed leading record labels, has died at the age of 94. He passed away at his home in Manhattan.

The official cause of death has not yet been disclosed. It is known that Davis had been experiencing breathing difficulties recently and was frequently receiving treatment at medical facilities.

In a statement, the producer’s family highlighted his immense contribution to the global music industry.

“To the whole world, our father was a legendary figure in the world of music, whose vision, intuition, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives,” reads the statement from the Davis family.

Clive Davis was born on April 4, 1932, in Brooklyn. He earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and initially had no plans to pursue a career in music.

However, at the age of 28, Davis began working at Columbia Records, and within a few years became the company’s president.

It was under his leadership that the label began actively collaborating with rock artists, signing contracts with bands and artists such as:

  • Santana;
  • Aerosmith;
  • Pink Floyd;
  • Bruce Springsteen.

In 1974, Davis took the helm of the newly formed Arista Records, and nine years later, he signed a contract with Whitney Houston—a move that proved to be one of the most successful decisions of his career.

The singer’s debut album was a sensational success—three singles simultaneously topped the music charts.

The producer has also worked with Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, and many other well-known artists.

In addition, he founded the label J Records, which became home to many popular artists.

Over the course of a decade in the music industry, Clive Davis has won five Grammy Awards.

In 2000, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the most influential figures in the music business—someone who was not a performer but had a significant impact on the development of contemporary music.

This was reported by Variety.
