Resident Evil tops North American box office with $60 million — Asharq Al-Awsat
Director Zach Cregger’s new film Resident Evil grossed $60 million in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend. The Sony Pictures release played in 3,684 theaters and posted the best opening result in the history of the video game-based film franchise.
A record-breaking franchise opening
As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, it is also the best opening of Cregger’s career, who is known for the films Barbarian and Weapons. Most previous installments of the franchise did not gross $60 million during their entire theatrical runs in North America. The exception was Resident Evil: Afterlife, released in 2010, which earned $60.1 million without adjusting for inflation.
Austin Abrams played a medical courier who, during his final assignment of the night, finds himself in Raccoon City and confronts infected creatures. At the time reported by the outlet, the film had a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Worldwide gross exceeds $108 million
According to PostTrak survey data, men made up 66% of the audience, while 75% of viewers were under the age of 35. The film received a B+ rating on the CinemaScore scale. Resident Evil reportedly cost $75 million to produce, excluding marketing and promotional expenses.
In international markets, the film earned another $48.3 million, bringing its worldwide opening gross to $108.3 million. Practical Magic 2 took second place at the North American box office with $12.2 million, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day came third with $6.5 million in its eighth weekend.
The Odyssey earned $4.9 million in its tenth weekend and placed fourth, while Coyote vs. Acme grossed $4.5 million to round out the top five. John Wilson’s documentary The History of Concrete earned $90,000 on one screen at IFC Center in New York.
