Seoul Arts Center to create a new orchestra in South Korea — Korea Herald
In Seoul, South Korea, the cultural institution Seoul Arts Center plans to create a new orchestra in 2027. Its president and CEO, Chang Han-na, announced this in an interview with the MBC television channel.
Funding and auditions
According to the Korea Herald, the orchestra will be established thanks to recently secured government funding. Its name has not yet been announced. Chang Han-na called securing funding for 2027 her most important achievement during her first five months in office.
The new ensemble plans to hold auditions across the country. Musicians will have the opportunity to perform at Seoul Arts Center as well as at regional venues.

Support for musicians
Chang Han-na said that South Korea has many outstanding musicians, but they are often recognized only after winning competitions abroad or performing with renowned foreign organizations. According to her, the initiative is intended to help create conditions in which Korean performers can gain international recognition while performing in their own country.
She also noted that the project will focus on musicians’ talent and abilities so that they can build careers without having to go abroad to gain professional recognition. Chang Han-na is a world-renowned cellist and conductor.
According to Seoul Arts Center, the institution’s budget in 2025 amounted to around 60 billion won, or $43 million, of which 24 billion won came from government subsidies.
