Johannesburg street art tells the city’s stories — Daily Maverick
In Johannesburg, South Africa, graffiti, murals and art installations are part of the city’s public space. According to Daily Maverick, street art can be seen in Newtown, Braamfontein, Maboneng, Soweto and Alex. The city combines large industrial surfaces for painting, a complex political history and urban renewal projects, including the Jozi My Jozi movement.
Works in the city’s districts
A house in Mzimhlophe in Orlando West, Soweto, was painted by local sign makers in the colours of the Orlando Pirates football club. On the more than 100-metre-high Soweto cooling towers, mural art is combined with commercial brands.
A new metal art installation, MojaNation, is located on Queen Elizabeth Bridge, with the project led by creative director Farai Maphurirano. Other works include Giggling Hyena by artist Malik, known online as @malikarts, as well as a Charlie Chaplin mural in Braamfontein. It was created by local graffiti and street artist Riot Top Two.

Historical subjects
On Beacon Street in Maboneng, on the walls of Access City, is Ethiopian Woman of the Mursi Tribe by artist Dbongz Mahlathi. His Crate-ivity project is also presented in the same district.
American street artist Shepard Fairey created the 10-storey work The Purple Shall Govern in Braamfontein. It is dedicated to events in Cape Town in 1989, when police sprayed participants in an anti-apartheid demonstration with a water cannon containing purple dye so they could be identified and detained.
