Ukrainian pianist, musicologist, and cultural historian Taras Filenko performed in Seoul in a concert titled “Melodies of Freedom: A Journey Through Ukrainian Musical Culture,” dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The event took place at the Eyelove Art Center.

During the concert, Filenko presented a work depicting the Ukrainian flag in the form of a wounded bird. As noted by The Korea Herald, this image conveyed Ukraine’s pain and resilience amid the ongoing war.

After his performance, the musician told the publication that he hopes for the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty. He also expressed the view that cultural dialogue—which introduces people to the poetry, dance, and achievements of different countries—can help build a more peaceful world.

The program featured works by Ukrainian composers from various periods. In particular, the program included Dmytro Bortnyansky’s Sonata in C Major, Mykola Lysenko’s “Elegy” and “Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes: Dumka-Shumka,” as well as Yakov Stepovoy’s prelude in memory of Taras Shevchenko. Filenko performed works by Lev Revutsky, Fedir Akimenko, Viktor Stepurko, and Myroslav Skoryk—including Skoryk’s famous “Melody”—and concluded the concert with an improvisation titled “Carol of the Bells and Beyond.”

According to the Ukrainian Embassy in Seoul, Filenko has performed in Mozambique, Botswana, and North Korea. Following the Russian invasion, he has also given concerts in Ukraine, promoting Ukrainian culture and the works of its composers.
