The Korea Herald launches third Herald K-Art Competition
The Korea Herald has launched the third nationwide Herald K-Art Competition, dedicated to South Korean traditional art. An organizing committee of 11 representatives of the art community was formed to conduct the competition.
The committee members’ appointment ceremony took place on Tuesday at Herald Square in Seoul. The event was attended by Herald Media Group CEO Choi Jin-young, Art and Bridge CEO Yang Jeong-seok, and traditional art figures appointed to the committee.
Competition categories
The competition aims to promote Korean traditional art and help discover new K-art content that reinterprets traditions through contemporary means. The organizers also seek to expand its international presence.
Entries will be accepted in six categories: traditional and contemporary calligraphy, muninhwa — literati painting, minhwa — Korean folk painting, embroidery, and bojagi — a traditional Korean cloth used for wrapping objects.

The committee includes, among others, Eom Jae-kwon, president of the Korean Minhwa Art Institute; Song Chang-su, former professor at Dongduk Women’s University and former president of the Korean Minhwa Association; Yoon In-su, director of the Minhwa and Court Painting Center; Kim Gwang-bok, senior adviser to the Korean Minhwa Association; and Lee Yong-cheol, former president of Dongbang Culture University.
Submissions and awards
The first stage of submissions will run from November 10 to 12 through the Art & Bridge website. An exhibition of finalists’ and winners’ works is scheduled for February at Dongduk Art Gallery and Gallery NaMu.
The winner will receive the CEO Korea Herald Award and 5 million won in prize money. Three runners-up will receive awards from local government heads and invitations to hold solo exhibitions; each such package is valued at approximately 2.5 million won.
