A performance by Russian violinist Repin has been canceled in Budapest following appeals from Ukraine

A performance by Russian violinist Vadim Repin, which was scheduled to open the new concert season of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, has been canceled in Budapest. Another performer took the stage in his place, and the event’s program was changed.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Repin’s performance was supposed to be one of the highlights of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra’s season opening, but his participation was ultimately canceled. “Vadim Repin’s performance, which was supposed to be a key part of the season opener, was replaced—a Hungarian violinist took his place in the concert,” the statement reads.

The event took place on the stage of the theater on Margaret Island in Budapest—one of Hungary’s most famous cultural venues, where dozens of concerts, opera and theater productions featuring international artists are held every year.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the decision to change the program was the result of efforts by the Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary and diplomatic contacts aimed at preventing Russian artists from participating in international cultural events.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also stated that it is consistently working to limit the presence of representatives of the Russian cultural community on international stages, citing Russia’s responsibility for the war against Ukraine as the rationale. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
