Twenty-eight seismic sensors have been installed at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv to protect the historic site
On June 23, 28 seismic sensors were installed at the St. Sophia of Kyiv National Reserve with support from UNESCO. The equipment will record vibrations from explosions, missile and drone flyovers, as well as other factors that could affect the condition of the historic structure.
The data collected will help scientists create a model of the structures’ condition and identify the most vulnerable areas of St. Sophia Cathedral and the bell tower.
At the same time, another important project is underway in the cathedral—restorers are uncovering 18th- and 19th-century paintings hidden beneath later layers. Once the work is complete, visitors will be able to view them during guided tours, according to the monument’s press office.
