Ukraine lacks storage facilities for cultural heritage, says the CEO of the Kyiv Lavra

Ukraine lacks specialized storage facilities for preserving and protecting cultural heritage sites amid the war and Russian attacks.

This was reported by Maksym Ostapenko, Director General of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, during the fourth International Scientific and Practical Conference “Strategic Communications in Wartime,” according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

"In Poland, there is a center created to protect museum artifacts from across the country, covering an area of about 20,000 square meters. Imagine the scale of this—it is truly a massive facility. It was built with Polish and European funds, and its cost is about €60 million. And this is just one of the centers for the protection of cultural heritage in Poland," Ostapenko noted.

According to him, several similar centers are already operating in European countries, while Ukraine currently lacks such facilities.

"In Ukraine, we can’t even discuss such matters in a comprehensive way yet—we lack sufficient capacity for the storage and protection of cultural heritage," Ostapenko emphasized.

In the Ternopil region, two Trypillian settlements have been added to the UNESCO list.

The Trypillian culture has been added to the preliminary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
