Venice Film Festival to open with Boyle film and award for Clooney

The 83rd Venice Film Festival will open on Wednesday evening with the presentation of the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement to George Clooney and the world premiere of Danny Boyle’s competition film Ink. This was reported by ANSA English.

Film about the purchase of The Sun

Ink is a biographical film about Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition of the British newspaper The Sun in 1969. The screenplay was written by James Graham, adapting his own 2017 play. The leading roles in the film were played by Jack O’Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy.

The film tells how the Australian media magnate acquired the troubled publication through News UK, which at the time was part of News International. A year earlier, Murdoch bought News of the World. After the acquisition, The Sun was turned into a tabloid with sensational headlines, page-three photographs and right-wing political positions.

Honor for Clooney

George Clooney, 65, will receive the honorary Golden Lion after a tribute speech delivered by his friend, actress Laura Dern. Last year, Clooney was in Venice as an actor and director with the film Jay Kelly.

The Venice Film Festival will run until September 12.
