Video: A scandal has erupted in Poltava over the Shakespeare monument
A bust of William Shakespeare was unveiled in Poltava; during the opening ceremony, it was solemnly declared to be Ukraine’s first monument to the outstanding English playwright.
However, the sculpture has already raised quite a few questions.
The authors of the post highlighted several points:
▪️ the bust’s resemblance to official portraits of Shakespeare;
▪️ the unusual appearance of the lower part of the sculpture;
▪️ the playwright’s clothing, which, in their opinion, more closely resembles a nude figure with a collar and buttons attached;
▪️ the spelling of Shakespeare’s last name on the bust and on the plaque next to it—the authors see this as a possible mistake;
▪️ the sculpture’s facial expression and a mysterious growth under the lower lip.
“We have some questions,” the authors of the post noted ironically.
In Ukraine, 2,138 cultural heritage sites and 2,640 cultural institutions have already been damaged as a result of Russian aggression. Among the damaged sites are museums, churches, historic buildings, and other structures, while 47 sites have been completely destroyed. At the same time, the actual scale of the losses may be greater, as a significant portion of the territory remains occupied.
