«Woman Unknown» wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival
Danish director May el-Toukhy won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in Italy for the post-war drama Woman Unknown. The film’s star, Mathilde Arcel, also received the award for Best Actress. This was a rare case in which one film received both the festival’s top prize and an acting award.
Other awards
May el-Toukhy’s film has the Danish title Kvinde Ukendt. As reported by The Hindu International, John Malkovich was named Best Actor. A documentary film about Gaza made in Israel received the Special Jury Prize.

The only female director in competition
May el-Toukhy was the only woman to direct a feature-length film in the festival’s main competition program. It included 21 films. This gender imbalance drew criticism during the festival and once again highlighted the barriers women face in the film industry.
