GNPC Explorco presents Voltaian Basin potential in Ghana
Ghana’s national exploration company, GNPC Explorco, presented the investment and exploration potential of the Voltaian Basin during Ghana Day at the AOW:Energy 2026 forum in Accra. The country seeks to attract new investment into the hydrocarbon exploration and production sector, MyJoyOnline reports.
The event in Accra brought together representatives of governments, national oil companies, international operators, investors and financial institutions from Africa’s energy sector.
An underexplored onshore basin
GNPC Explorco Managing Director Sam Opoku Arthur stated the strategic importance of the Voltaian Basin for Ghana’s exploration program. He presented the basin’s geological potential and opportunities for investors and strategic partners.
The Voltaian Basin is Ghana’s main prospective onshore basin and one of the country’s least explored oil and gas provinces. GNPC Explorco said it is working to improve geological understanding of the basin, reduce exploration risks and create opportunities for credible partners to join the next stage of Ghana’s oil and gas sector development.

Seeking partners for exploration
According to Opoku Arthur, technical expertise, cooperation and strategic investment are needed to unlock the potential of prospective basins. He described the Voltaian Basin as a promising area for Ghana’s future exploration and noted that the company expects the participation of credible investors and partners.
Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, the head of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and the head of the Petroleum Commission also spoke during the Ghana Day program. They presented their assessments of the investment environment in the oil and gas sector and the country’s broader energy plans.
GNPC Explorco is seeking technical and financial partners for the exploration and possible development of underexplored basins. The company said it plans to carry out this work with an emphasis on responsible exploration and creating sustainable value for Ghana.
