Tema Oil Refinery receives 950,000 barrels of crude from Sankofa field — MyJoyOnline

Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) in Ghana has received 950,000 barrels of crude oil from the Sankofa-Gye Nyame field. This is the first time the facility will process oil from this field.

Supply through GNPC

The crude was supplied by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and delivered by Sonangol Cazenga. The refinery is expected to process the oil into petroleum products for Ghana’s domestic market.

According to MyJoyOnline, a typical Sankofa cargo amounts to approximately 950,000 barrels. TOR said the delivery demonstrates the potential for closer cooperation between the upstream and downstream sectors of Ghana’s oil industry.

Resumption of refinery operations

The head of TOR noted that the partnership with GNPC provides an opportunity to strengthen the facility’s operations and retain more of the value of oil resources within the country. The delivery took place amid the refinery’s efforts to fully resume operations after extensive maintenance.

In his 2026 State of the Nation Address, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said that TOR had resumed crude oil processing for the first time since 2018. TOR and GNPC also plan to identify and develop other areas of cooperation.
