The United States seeks to become a major source of energy resources for India, which has long been looking for ways to diversify supplies due to its significant energy needs. A senior US State Department official stated this, The Hindu International reports.

According to the official, the United States is increasing hydrocarbon exports and seeks to meet part of Indian demand. He noted that the United States is the largest exporter of liquefied petroleum gas and ranks second in exports of liquefied natural gas.

The State Department representative said that India had been looking for ways to diversify its energy sources even before the war, but that this process needs to be accelerated, in his view. Alternative supplies are regularly discussed by, among others, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Sanctions law and Russian energy resources

Last week, US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The document allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that purchase Russian oil and gas, including China and India.

The official stressed that the adoption of the law does not mean the automatic and immediate use of this instrument. According to him, the law provides for a broad national security exception, and the United States expects support from partners, including India, in efforts to end the war.

He also stated that access to Venezuelan and Iranian energy sources had long been restricted. The official linked India's potential access to the Venezuelan market to the Trump administration's operation in Venezuela. He claimed that India had previously had oil refineries in Venezuela, but their restoration is complicated by the damage that, according to the official, the industry suffered under Nicolás Maduro's rule.
