Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy project capacity rose 88% in 2025 — Asharq Al-Awsat
In Saudi Arabia, the total capacity of renewable energy projects commissioned in 2025 increased by 88% and reached 12.313 GW at the end of the year. Investments in existing projects exceeded 36 billion Saudi riyals, or $9.6 billion. According to Asharq Al-Awsat, 15 renewable energy projects were operating in the kingdom by the end of 2025.
Solar, wind and green hydrogen
The statistics were released by Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics as part of the Raqam Saudi initiative. The sector’s growth covers solar and wind generation, green hydrogen production projects, as well as the development of related industries, supply chain localization and specialist training.
Majid Refae, head of the Saudi Polytechnic Institute for Renewable Energy SPIRE, said that the sector is moving from launching individual initiatives to large-scale operation of facilities. According to him, this is supported by faster implementation of National Renewable Energy Program projects, increased domestic and foreign investment in clean technologies, and the country’s competitiveness.

Target for 2030
The strategy for the sector’s development is led by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy in cooperation with the Public Investment Fund. The kingdom’s stated target envisages renewable sources providing 50% of its electricity mix by 2030.
Refae expects a new stage of growth in 2026–2030, when large solar and wind projects will begin operating and green hydrogen production and export capacity will expand. He noted that state funding alone is insufficient to meet the stated goals: local private businesses and international companies must participate through public-private partnerships.
Local production and personnel
According to Refae’s assessment, the development of renewable energy projects should stimulate domestic component production, reduce dependence on imports, create jobs and increase value added in the economy. SPIRE is developing training programs in solar and wind energy, green hydrogen and energy storage technologies, focused on the practical needs of the industry.
