Cyprus President urges Chevron to speed up Aphrodite field development — Cyprus Mail

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has urged Chevron to move from planning to implementing the Aphrodite gas field development project and speed up the next steps. He discussed the matter with Javier la Rosa, Chevron’s head for base assets and developing countries, Cyprus Mail reports.

Final investment decision

Christodoulides called the field’s development a strategic priority for Cyprus and noted that significant progress had already been made on the project. Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the meeting confirmed a shared commitment to advance the development of the deposit on the basis of the approved development and production plan.

The parties also discussed the progress of technical and commercial work, as well as the next steps toward making a final investment decision. According to Letymbiotis, the president stressed the need to maintain momentum, accelerate the timeline for the decision and begin natural gas production as soon as possible.

Energy cooperation with Egypt

The talks also addressed the strategic importance of energy cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt. The parties mentioned progress in using gas from the Aphrodite field through Egyptian infrastructure.

Letymbiotis said this opens prospects for the commercial use of deposits in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and strengthens regional energy planning and interconnections in the Eastern Mediterranean. Christodoulides also confirmed Cyprus’ readiness to continue cooperation with Chevron and other partners to implement the project’s next stages.

According to the government spokesperson’s assessment, the successful development of Aphrodite will be an important milestone for Cyprus and will strengthen the role of the Eastern Mediterranean in European energy planning and energy security.
