Diesel in Britain rises to a record £2 per litre — The Guardian

In the United Kingdom, the average price of diesel fuel has reached a record £2 per litre. As The Guardian reports, citing data from the motoring organisation RAC, the average cost of diesel at UK filling stations reached 200.01 pence per litre.

Cost of filling up rises by £32

Filling up an average family car now costs around £110. This is nearly £32 more than before the start of the US and Israeli war against Iran at the end of February. According to the publication, the war disrupted supplies of crude oil and petroleum products from the Persian Gulf, causing costs to rise across the economy.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said that nobody wanted to cross the £2-per-litre mark. Drivers and small businesses are feeling the rise in fuel costs.

Supply concerns

UK Transport Minister Keir Mather said that the country is not facing a diesel fuel shortage. His comment came after Donald Trump threatened to cut off supplies of this fuel from the United States.

Fuel prices in Europe have also reached record levels in recent weeks. The publication attributes diesel prices rising faster than global oil prices to reduced output at refineries damaged by the war in the Middle East and Russia.

Before the war in Ukraine, Russia, an aggressor state, supplied between 10% and 15% of global diesel supplies. Another roughly 10% of global diesel supplies passed through the Strait of Hormuz from Persian Gulf countries before Iran, according to The Guardian, began obstructing shipping in the strait in response to US and Israeli attacks.
