Ghana calls for withdrawal of National Petroleum Authority bill
In Ghana, the Institute for Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) has called on the government and parliament to withdraw the proposed National Petroleum Authority (NPA) bill. The institute believes that, in its current version, the document could undermine the existing mandate of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST).
Strategic fuel reserves
As MyJoyOnline reports, IERPP Executive Director Professor Isaac Boadi said that the bill could affect the management of Ghana's strategic fuel reserves and the country's overall fuel security.
According to Boadi, proper consultations with key stakeholders were not held before the initiative was introduced. The IERPP calls for the document to be withdrawn, additional consultations to be held, and its provisions to be reviewed.

Boadi noted that BOST plays an important role in Ghana's fuel security by maintaining strategic storage capacity and ensuring supplies during disruptions. In his view, the proposed changes could affect the company's existing mandate and the country's ability to manage strategic fuel reserves.
Potential consequences for employees
The professor also expressed concern about the bill's possible impact on employment at BOST. In his assessment, the changes could affect around 689 company employees, and approximately half of them could potentially lose their jobs if the document is adopted without changes.
The IERPP believes that during further consideration of the bill, parliament should pay attention to BOST's mandate, labor consequences, and the management of strategic fuel reserves.
