Construction begins on Canada’s largest CO2 capture complex
Construction has begun on the Origins hub for carbon dioxide capture and storage near Clive in Alberta, Canada. The federal government of Canada, the Alberta government and Enhance Energy have launched construction of the facility, which is expected to become the country’s largest complex of its kind, Anadolu Agency reports.
Launch in January 2027
According to Natural Resources Canada, Origins is set to begin operations in January 2027. At the initial stage, the hub will be able to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, with plans to further expand its capacity.
The department said that this volume of carbon dioxide storage is equivalent to removing more than 500,000 cars from the roads each year.

Connection to the CO2 network
The hub will be connected to Alberta’s existing CO2 transportation network. Initially, it will serve industrial enterprises in the Industrial Heartland region, including facilities in the oil and gas, petrochemical, cement and energy sectors.
The project expands Enhance Energy’s existing facility in Clive. According to the company, the facility has stored more than 9 million tonnes of CO2 since 2020 and generated more than $600 million in economic activity.
Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson said the project demonstrates cooperation between the federal and provincial governments and industry. Alberta Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean linked the hub to attracting investment and creating jobs in rural areas of the province.
