Ukrainians have signed more than 1,300 contracts to sell electricity they generate themselves

As of May 2026, 1,377 electricity purchase and sale agreements had been concluded in Ukraine under the self-generation mechanism. This was announced by Oleg Kostrikin, director of the Department for Regulation of Retail Market Relations at the NEURC.

The self-generation mechanism allows consumers to meet their own electricity needs using autonomous power generation facilities and to officially sell any surplus to the public power grid.

Private households, homeowners’ associations, and businesses of various sizes can take advantage of this opportunity.

According to Kostrikin, to stimulate the development of distributed generation, the regulator has simplified the procedures for installing and connecting generation facilities to the grid. Certain categories of consumers are no longer required to obtain technical specifications, order a connection service, or coordinate project documentation with the distribution system operator.

In addition, the development of self-generation is supported by government financing programs. Preferential loans are available to businesses and homeowners’ associations under the “Affordable Loans 5-7-9%” program, while private households can access the “Energy Loan” program with a virtually zero interest rate.

The NEURC believes that the increase in the number of such contracts indicates that Ukrainians and businesses are actively transitioning toward energy self-sufficiency, which enhances the resilience of the country’s power system.
