U.S. national debt surpasses $38 trillion for the first time

The total U.S. national debt has officially exceeded $38 trillion, marking a historic high. In the past month alone, debt increased by $500 billion — roughly $23 billion per day. Over the past five years, America’s debt has grown by $10 trillion, and the government is now spending more simply to service its obligations.

Economists warn that the current pace of debt growth is the fastest in U.S. history. Interest payments are already surpassing defense spending, raising fears of a looming fiscal crisis if monetary policy remains unchanged.

According to ZeroHedge, the U.S. government now spends over $1 trillion annually on interest payments, and total debt could hit $40 trillion by 2026. Analysts describe this as a “debt spiral” — one that could severely limit future economic flexibility.
