Aschenbrenner’s fund becomes active in options market again after asset decline

Situational Awareness, the hedge fund of artificial intelligence researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has again become active in the options market. It was buying option positions in shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Bloom Energy and Coreweave, CNBC reports, citing its sources.

New options positions

According to CNBC’s sources, these transactions took place late last week and early this week. Among other companies whose securities the fund was active in, the sources named SK Hynix and SanDisk.

Situational Awareness’ return to public-market transactions came after a sharp reduction in the fund’s assets in July. At the beginning of the month, its assets exceeded $45 billion, but later fell to about $10 billion, CNBC writes.

Sale of Citadel positions

According to the television channel, a steep decline in the shares of artificial intelligence-related companies that the fund had bought using leverage forced Situational Awareness to sell its public-stock positions to Ken Griffin’s Citadel. CNBC describes the deal as an urgent sale intended to prevent the fund’s collapse.

At the same time, the fund retained stakes in private companies, including Anthropic. CNBC’s sources did not specify whether Situational Awareness is raising new funds for its current options transactions or using assets remaining after the July sell-off and the sale of Citadel positions.
