Cash in circulation rose to UAH 890 billion: NBU explained the reasons and named
As of October 1, 2025, the amount of cash in Ukraine reached UAH 890.1 billion, which is UAH 67.7 billion more than at the beginning of the year. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, after a decline in cash in the first quarter, demand for it picked up again in the second and third quarters, in particular due to seasonal factors and growing security risks associated with the war, which increase the need for cash.

In particular, the most common banknotes in circulation are those with a denomination of 500 hryvnia, which account for 26.6% of the total amount of cash. On average, each Ukrainian has 63 banknotes and 191 coins. The first nine months of 2025 saw the highest growth rate in the number of banknotes.
The NBU also announced the gradual withdrawal of coins, which no longer play a significant role in payments. The withdrawal will reduce the costs of their production and transportation. At the same time, this may affect the overall circulation of cash in the country.
