Musician loses nearly 6 BTC due to fake Ledger app
American musician G. Love reported losing approximately 5.9 BTC while transferring his crypto wallet to a new computer, stating he had downloaded a counterfeit Ledger app after which the funds disappeared “instantly.”
On-chain analyst ZachXBT tracked the flow of the funds, confirming that 5.92 BTC was laundered through deposit addresses on the KuCoin exchange.
However, the community expressed doubts about the fake app story, noting that Ledger requires transaction confirmations directly on the hardware device. They also pointed out the possibility of developer identity spoofing in the macOS App Store.
Ledger is a well-known manufacturer of hardware cryptocurrency wallets, offering enhanced security for storing digital assets. The company has built a strong reputation and is widely used by crypto enthusiasts worldwide.
This incident serves as a warning for users to remain vigilant when installing apps and to always verify their authenticity, especially when managing cryptocurrency assets.
Going forward, increased security measures for official apps and heightened cybersecurity awareness within the crypto community are likely to follow.
