Alkermes reports potential of ADHD treatment drug — STAT News

Alkermes reported early signs of the potential effectiveness of ALKS 7290 for treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. In a randomized Phase 1 study, the drug was well tolerated by participants and demonstrated a signal of efficacy, STAT News reports.

Study results

At the start of the study, participants had a median score of 39 points on the Adult ADHD Investigator Symptom Rating Scale. According to the publication, this result corresponded to moderate or severe ADHD symptoms.

After two weeks, participants receiving a high dose of ALKS 7290 — 50 milligrams — had a 19-point reduction in their score. As STAT News notes, this indicated that symptoms had shifted to a mild level.

Orexin agonist

ALKS 7290 belongs to orexin agonists, a class of drugs being considered for treating rare sleep disorders. According to the publication, Alkermes presented results for the first time indicating the possible benefit of therapy in this class for people with ADHD.
