STAT readers discussed physicians’ education and AI accountability in medicine
STAT News published a selection of readers’ letters on September 5, 2026, in response to essays from its First Opinion platform. The letters addressed, among other things, osteopathic medical education and accountability for the use of artificial intelligence in medicine.
Osteopathic medical education
One of the letters concerns the essay “Tear down the wall between M.D. and D.O. education” by Abigail McKenzie and Vijay Rajput. The letter’s author thanked them for drawing attention to the bias and unfair difficulties that, he said, graduates of osteopathic medical schools face when applying for residency.

At the same time, he believes that graduates of D.O. programs should not abandon the principles and practices they bring to the healthcare system. In the reader’s view, the existence of separate educational pathways is not limited solely to organizational matters. He also noted that organizations, examinations, accreditation systems, and professional structures are important, but they are not what determines the value of osteopathic medical education.
Accountability for medical AI
In another letter, a reader stated that a click, signature, or brief review should not automatically shift responsibility from an artificial intelligence developer or platform to a physician. The selection was published in the letters to the editor section, where STAT posts selected responses to First Opinion materials.
