Greece records a record 324 cases of West Nile virus
Greece has registered 324 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus infection this year. This is the highest annual figure on record, surpassing the previous record of 317 cases set in 2018.
Death toll rises to 30
Over the past week, health authorities registered 34 new infections and six additional deaths. The total number of deaths from the virus has reached 30, Anadolu Agency reports, citing data from Greece’s National Public Health Organization published by Kathimerini.
Complications affecting the central nervous system developed in 217 patients. A total of 68 people remain in hospitals, including 32 receiving treatment in intensive care units.

Most cases recorded in Attica
The Attica region, which includes Athens, accounts for 56.8% of registered cases. Experts believe the actual number of infected people may be significantly higher, as severe symptoms develop in less than 1% of those infected.
West Nile virus is transmitted mainly through bites from infected mosquitoes. People over the age of 50 and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness. Despite mosquito activity in Europe, Greek authorities believe the outbreak in the country has already passed its peak.
