In Kharkiv, a woman contracted botulism after receiving Botox

On August 21, the first case of iatrogenic botulism in the region was reported in Kharkiv in a 56-year-old woman following botulinum toxin treatment of her face and neck at a private cosmetic clinic. Two days after the procedure, she experienced weakness and severe thirst, and about a week later, she developed speech and swallowing difficulties, after which she was hospitalized.

The woman underwent botulinum toxin treatment on her face and neck. Two days after the procedure, she experienced general weakness and severe thirst. About a week later, her condition worsened—she began to experience speech and swallowing difficulties.

The Kharkiv resident then sought medical help. She was hospitalized and administered botulinum toxin antitoxin. Currently, her condition is considered satisfactory.

Lyubov Makhota, director of the Kharkiv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that there are questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the procedure. “There are doubts regarding the specialist’s qualifications, the quality of the medication, its expiration date, and storage conditions,” she said.

As a reminder, Ukraine will establish its first Center for Robotic Surgery.

In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman underwent simultaneous removal of a recurrent ventral hernia, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth.
