At the Kyiv Perinatal Center, premature babies weighing as little as 500 grams are cared for

Up to 10% of children at the Kyiv Perinatal Center are born prematurely. The facility has the necessary resources to care for these infants, but treating the most complex cases requires significant funding.

According to the center’s director, Dmytro Govseev, during the first year of full-scale war, the rate of premature births dropped from about 10% to 5%. In 2025, the rate rose again to 8–9%, and this year it remains at roughly that level.

“A baby weighing one kilogram should be born alive and should live,” Govseev emphasized.

The center cares for infants born as early as the 25th–28th week of pregnancy. Some newborns weigh as little as 500 grams at birth.

The doctor noted that caring for such children is a complex and expensive process. On average, treating one premature infant costs approximately 35,000 hryvnias; however, depending on the child’s condition, costs can range from 20,000 to over 100,000 hryvnias.

A significant portion of the costs consists of medications for treating respiratory disorders. According to Govseev, for the past two years the center has been forced to purchase these medications on its own, although it previously received them through a medical program.

As a reminder, Ukraine will establish its first Center for Robotic Surgery.

In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman had a recurrent ventral hernia removed at the same time, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth.
