Skipping breakfast may affect hormones and cholesterol levels — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, MyJoyOnline examined the possible effects of skipping breakfast on the body. The article notes that avoiding a morning meal has become more common alongside the popularity of intermittent fasting, but its consequences may vary depending on the person and their eating pattern.

According to survey data cited by the outlet, 13% of adults never eat breakfast. Some dietitians believe that eating in the morning is important, although the timing of breakfast may be a matter of personal preference. Not only timing but also the composition of the meal matters: some people choose a more nutritious late breakfast, while others eat immediately after waking up.

Hormones, energy and concentration

According to MyJoyOnline, intermittent fasting may lower insulin levels and improve insulin sensitivity. At the same time, one study mentioned by the outlet linked skipping breakfast combined with eating late to lower levels of leptin, which helps people feel full, and higher levels of ghrelin, the hunger hormone.

Skipping breakfast may also be accompanied by lower energy levels, feelings of dizziness and poorer concentration. The outlet explains this by saying that in the morning, glycogen stores that support the body during overnight fasting are usually depleted. For full functioning, the brain needs a constant supply of carbohydrates.

Weight and cardiovascular risks

MyJoyOnline cites data from several studies according to which avoiding breakfast may raise cortisol and “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. The authors of the article also note that people who do not eat breakfast are 21% more likely to have cardiovascular diseases.

A review of scientific studies mentioned by the outlet found that people who skipped breakfast lost an average of 0.66 kg more weight than those who ate breakfast. Other studies cited by MyJoyOnline indicated that people who eat breakfast consume approximately 260 more calories during the day than those who do not. At the same time, skipping a morning meal does not guarantee lower calorie intake during the day and may contribute to snacking because of increased hunger, as well as affect metabolism and the gut microbiome.
