Durov and Musk criticize WhatsApp over message security concerns
Pavel Durov and Elon Musk have sharply criticized WhatsApp following reports that the messenger does not adequately protect users’ messages. A class-action lawsuit with these allegations has been filed in the US District Court in San Francisco, highlighting the gravity of the issue.
The lawsuit claims that Meta and WhatsApp “store, analyze, and have access to virtually all supposedly “private” user chats.” The companies and their executives are accused of defrauding billions of WhatsApp users worldwide. Meta maintains that WhatsApp messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, accessible only to the chat participants.
In addition, competitors have joined the criticism of WhatsApp. Elon Musk, owner of the social network X, stated that “WhatsApp is not secure” and even Signal raises doubts, urging users to switch to X Chat. Telegram founder Pavel Durov also expressed concerns about WhatsApp’s security, noting that their analysis of WhatsApp’s encryption implementation revealed multiple attack vectors.
Telegram, launched in 2013, is a messaging platform focused on security and privacy, having grown into one of the world’s leading communication services with tens of millions of users.
Overall, the WhatsApp security controversy draws global attention and casts doubt on the reliability of the popular messenger, potentially influencing user preferences in the future.
Going forward, increased regulatory scrutiny and further debates about information security standards in major communication platforms are expected.
