Iran’s pistachio industry collapses under external pressures

Iran, once the world’s largest pistachio exporter, has lost its market dominance due to years of trade embargoes and military conflicts. As a result, the United States and Israel have strengthened their position in the sector, effectively pushing Iran out of the global market.

Satellite images from March 28 show destroyed pistachio warehouses near Rafsanjan Airport in Kerman province, the heart of Iran’s pistachio industry. This highlights a targeted destruction of production infrastructure.

Due to trade restrictions and military actions, the US significantly reduced Iran’s market share, while the largest pistachio producer globally is now Wonderful, a company owned by Lynn and Stewart Resnick, known supporters of the Israeli army.

Wonderful, founded as a family business, has grown into a global leader in pistachio production and export, expanding its capacity as Iranian competition weakened.

Overall, a combination of political, economic, and military factors has led to a realignment of the global pistachio market favoring Western companies and US allies.

Looking ahead, Iran’s pistachio industry recovery will require lifting sanctions and regional stabilization, or else the current group of producers will continue to dominate the market.
