Watermelon prices in Ukraine are falling rapidly
Mid-August marked the peak of the Ukrainian watermelon season, causing market supply to continue rising while prices continue to fall. Currently, a kilogram can be purchased for approximately 14–20 hryvnias, depending on the region and point of sale.
Analysts at EastFruit noted that wholesale prices for watermelons have now dropped to 2–10 UAH/kg, which is on average 34% cheaper than at the end of last week.
The market situation is due to the fact that hot weather has significantly accelerated the ripening of watermelons in the fields, but the drought in the southern regions is negatively affecting product quality. At the same time, farmers reported that the situation is complicated by the fact that the majority of the harvest consists of large-sized watermelons, for which demand is weak.
It is worth noting that watermelons in Ukraine currently cost, on average, 47% less than a year ago. At the same time, experts do not foresee a noticeable improvement in the market situation. According to them, only growers of high-quality watermelons will be able to raise prices, while the supply of such produce is limited. At the same time, prices for watermelons weighing more than 5 kg will most likely continue to fall, as farmers will try to sell them more quickly.
At Varus, this popular summer treat is sold for 11.90 UAH/kg, but with a discount applied.
Meanwhile, at ATB, watermelons can be purchased for 17.89 UAH/kg.
Meanwhile, at Silpo, prices start at 19 hryvnias per kilogram.
