Chinese tech companies bypass Nvidia chip restrictions using foreign data centers

Chinese technology giants such as Alibaba and ByteDance have found a way to circumvent bans on the supply of advanced Nvidia chips by conducting training of their artificial intelligence models abroad. They utilise data center infrastructure in Southeast Asia that is not owned by Chinese firms, helping them evade the restrictions imposed in April.

Following the April sanctions that prohibited the supply of the latest H20 GPUs, Chinese companies have significantly increased model training outside the country. Meanwhile, the firm DeepSeek avoided difficulties thanks to pre-established equipment stockpiles and cooperation with local manufacturers such as Huawei.

Despite tightening sanctions, Chinese tech giants demonstrate significant adaptability in advancing their AI technologies, which may impact the global balance in artificial intelligence and the semiconductor industry.
