Toyota and Suzuki have suspended car production due to a typhoon

Due to the approach of the powerful Typhoon Chan-mi, Japan’s two largest automakers—Toyota and Suzuki—were forced to temporarily suspend operations at 18 of their plants. Company management made this decision as a precautionary measure, prioritizing the safety of personnel and the preservation of production infrastructure over current profits.

Toyota notified its employees of the production line shutdown the day before, on June 2, 2026. The following day, the vast majority of the group’s plants ceased operations. The sole exception was the plant in Miyawaka (Fukuoka Prefecture), as it is geographically located outside the expected path of the storm.

Despite the inevitable financial losses due to the shutdown, Toyota emphasized the importance of minimizing risks to people, as the winds from previous similar typhoons were capable of blowing not only pedestrians but also heavy vehicles off the roads.

On June 3, Suzuki also completely halted production at all five of its plants located in Shizuoka Prefecture. The automaker’s management expressed solidarity with its industry peers, noting that protecting the lives and health of employees during extreme weather conditions is an absolute priority. Additionally, the storm indirectly affected Subaru — at its plant in Yajima (Ota City, Gunma Prefecture), some production lines had to be partially halted due to logistical disruptions and delays in the delivery of necessary auto components.

At the same time, the large plants of Honda and Nissan Motor are currently continuing to operate as usual. Their production facilities are located far from the typhoon’s path, so there was no need to implement emergency restrictions. It is expected that there will be no prolonged shutdowns: most of Toyota and Suzuki’s assembly lines are set to resume vehicle production as early as the evening shift, once the typhoon passes and weather conditions stabilize.
