UK Sees Record Rise in Cash Withdrawals from ATMs
The United Kingdom has recorded a sharp rise in cash withdrawals from ATMs, reaching £4.2bn in 2025 — surpassing the previous record set in 2017. This marks the fourth consecutive year of growth in cash-withdrawal activity.
Around 34.7 million ATM withdrawals were made — up 6% from the previous year — while the average withdrawal amount increased from £113 to £120. The trend applies to both bank customers and external ATM users.
Analysts say the renewed reliance on cash reflects a desire among households to better manage spending amid high prices and financial pressure. The shift is also taking place against the backdrop of widespread bank-branch closures across the country.
At the same time, some institutions plan to maintain a physical branch and ATM presence, viewing it as an important element of financial accessibility for communities.
