Small cruise ships open access to quiet Caribbean harbors — Cyprus Mail

Small cruise ships open access to quiet Caribbean harbors — Cyprus Mail

Thanks to their shallower draft, small cruise ships can enter quiet bays and disembark passengers directly from tender boats, while large liners are limited to deep-water piers and major tourist ports. This was reported by Cyprus Mail in an article about Caribbean itineraries.

The publication notes that large ships require deep water and developed port infrastructure, so they usually call at major hubs such as Nassau or St. Thomas. Smaller vessels, by contrast, can anchor in sheltered bays and bring travelers to small islands and coastal villages.

Different cruise formats

The article compares three types of travel. Royal Caribbean’s large vessels are aimed primarily at family vacations with water parks, children’s clubs and large-scale entertainment programs, but their itineraries mainly include major ports.

The luxury segment is represented by Explora Journeys: its ships can accommodate up to 900 guests, offer several restaurants and make extended calls at smaller ports. Lindblad Expeditions’ expedition cruises, operated in partnership with National Geographic, usually accommodate fewer than 150 passengers. Naturalists work on board, while Zodiac inflatable boats are used for landings in hard-to-reach locations.

Destinations beyond major ports

Among the less crowded destinations, the authors name Bequia in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, known for its shipbuilding traditions and coral reefs; Terre-de-Haut in the Îles des Saintes in the French West Indies; Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands; and Anguilla. The article emphasizes that not only the port of call but also the duration of the stop matters: arriving in the morning and departing late in the evening provides more time to explore the area.

According to data cited by Cyprus Mail, 64% of travelers sought to avoid mass-tourism destinations in the World Tourism Organization’s 2024 Global Travel Trends report. The publication also cites the Cruise Lines International Association, which reported a 15% increase in demand for small-ship itineraries compared with previous years.

Dining and environmental solutions

Explora Journeys offers the Fil Rouge, Sakura, Marble & Co. Grill and Med Yacht Club restaurants, with dining at them included in the cruise fare. The article also notes that the company’s new ships use liquefied natural gas and have shore power connections. The authors name the dry season from December to May as the most favorable period for visiting quiet Caribbean harbors.
