Instagram to limit reach of unlabeled profiles with AI-generated people

Instagram is changing its rules for labeling profiles featuring people created by artificial intelligence and will limit the reach of accounts that do not disclose this information. The platform will rename the existing “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” so that users can more clearly understand that the person in the profile was generated or substantially created with the help of AI. TechCrunch reports.

Rules for creators

Creators who properly label profiles featuring AI-generated people will not face restrictions solely because the person on their page was artificially created. At the same time, accounts that do not use the appropriate label may lose part of their reach.

The new requirement does not apply to every use of artificial intelligence. The label is not required for users who use AI to edit photos, improve captions, create graphics, or make other creative changes.

Response to AI influencers

Instagram explained that the policy change is partly connected to the experiences of users who came across profiles that appeared to belong to real people and later learned that the depicted person was entirely created by AI. The company said users want to know when a profile contains an artificial intelligence-generated person.

The emergence of AI influencers on social media is causing growing concern. Wired previously wrote about more than two dozen Instagram accounts that likely featured AI-generated men and promoted the Goose dating app. According to the publication, some of these accounts sent private messages to potential users urging them to register.

The New York Times also reported in July on hundreds of AI-generated doctors, healers, and wellness personalities on social media who promoted supplements or spread health claims. Separately, Instagram had previously faced criticism over a tool that allowed images to be generated using other people’s likenesses. Meta later removed this feature.
