In New York, United States, American tennis player Ben Shelton defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semi-final 4:6, 6:3, 6:3, 7:5 and advanced to the tournament final. In the decisive match, the eighth seed will play Alexander Zverev.

How the semi-final unfolded

Tiafoe won the first set. At 5:4, he took the lead after Shelton's double fault, then held his serve and closed out the set in his favour.

In the second set, Tiafoe tried to play through his opponent's backhand, which the report described as Shelton's weaker shot. However, Shelton increased the intensity of his play, levelled the match in sets and, in the third set, broke serve in the fifth game to take the lead in the match.

In the fourth set, Shelton made use of his powerful left-handed serve and solid defensive play. Towards the end of the set, he increased the pressure on Tiafoe and secured a place in his first Grand Slam tournament final.

According to Channel NewsAsia, Shelton's victory brought the United States closer to ending a 23-year wait for a Grand Slam champion in men's singles.
