Valencia sack coach Corberan and CEO Gourlay
Spanish football club Valencia on September 13 dismissed head coach Carlos Corberan and chief executive Ron Gourlay after a winless start to the season. As Channel NewsAsia reports, the team earned one point in its first five La Liga matches and sits bottom of the table.
Fan pressure
In recent weeks, Corberan and Gourlay had come under increasing pressure from fans over the team’s poor results. During Valencia’s latest home matches at the Mestalla stadium, calls for Corberan’s resignation were heard from the stands.
Corberan took charge of the club in December 2024 and helped it avoid relegation, finishing the season in 12th place. Last season, Valencia finished ninth, though the team’s style of play was criticised. Overall, Corberan managed the club for 72 matches, recording 28 wins and 26 defeats.

Interim coach
Gourlay had worked at Valencia since May 2025 and repeatedly expressed public support for Corberan. The club also terminated the contracts of four employees who worked under Gourlay, as well as Corberan’s coaching staff.
In a statement, Valencia said the decision was intended to begin a new phase in the management of its sporting structure and football operations. Valencia Mestalla coach Oscar Sanchez will take charge of the first team on an interim basis. The club’s next match will be on Tuesday against Deportivo Alaves.
