The 2026 World Cup is approaching a historic record
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is generating a great deal of interest among fans. The tournament is already setting record attendance figures in the group stage and could become the most popular World Cup in history.
Despite record-high ticket prices and visa restrictions for some fans, the stadiums are nearly full, and television broadcasts are drawing audiences in the millions. After the first 44 matches of the tournament, total attendance exceeded 2.85 million spectators, and the average stadium occupancy rate was 99.6%. June 16 was particularly impressive, with more than 281,000 people attending World Cup matches in person.
FIFA is now almost certain that the all-time record for total attendance at World Cups, set back in the 1994 World Cup in the United States, will be broken. Thanks to the expanded format featuring 104 matches, the current tournament has every chance of surpassing the previous record well before the final.
The television viewership figures are no less impressive. In the U.S., the national team’s match against Paraguay drew 27.5 million viewers and became the highest-rated soccer broadcast in the country’s history. Record-breaking viewership figures were also recorded in Mexico and Canada.
Amid such interest, FIFA expects record revenue from ticket sales and VIP packages. According to experts’ estimates, revenue could approach $4 billion, which would be several times higher than the figures from the previous World Cup in Qatar. This is particularly driven by the fact that official ticket prices for some matches reached several hundred dollars, while on the secondary market, even the cheapest seats were selling for nearly $800.
Economists attribute the frenzy to the fact that many people are willing to cut back on everyday expenses to participate in a unique global event. For a significant portion of the American audience, the World Cup is not just a soccer tournament, but a major cultural and social phenomenon.
