FIFA faced an unusual situation during the sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup matches. Due to a technical glitch, some fans received a message claiming they could get tickets for free, which caused confusion among those hoping to attend the tournament. The issue was later resolved.
Why did this happen?
On Thursday, June 4, FIFA released an official statement explaining that the tickets were issued without charge due to a glitch during payment processing at the order stage. The erroneous transactions took place as early as May 21. According to the Ticket Talk Network platform, which tracks ticket issues, fans received warning letters. They have exactly seven days to pay the full cost of the seats, otherwise they will be permanently removed from their accounts. It is reported that these tickets were purchased for group stage matches to be hosted by Toronto, Canada.
Ticket Incidents at the World Cup
This incident is not the first story related to World Cup tickets. For example, FIFA is suspected of potentially violating consumer protection laws, specifically regarding artificially inflated prices. This is because organizers use a dynamic pricing system that allows them to change ticket prices right up until the start of matches depending on demand
In addition, the glitch exposed inconsistencies in the federation leadership’s statements. Despite the fact that more than three months ago, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced a complete sellout for all 104 matches of the tournament, tickets are still available for purchase.
An investigation has been launched in the U.S. into FIFA’s manipulation of ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup.
As a reminder, FIFA will organize a musical show for the first time during halftime of the 2026 World Cup final. The decision will be implemented during the match scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the organization announced.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) is preparing changes to the rules regarding yellow card suspensions for the 2026 World Cup.
