Dodgers beat Reds 6-3 in Ohtani's return game
The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 in Los Angeles, United States, in the opening game of the series. According to The Japan Times, Shohei Ohtani returned to the Dodgers lineup after missing the previous four games because of discomfort in his left knee, right biceps and neck.
Ohtani played as the designated hitter. He had no hits in three at-bats, drew one walk and struck out twice. Over his past seven games, he has two hits in 26 at-bats and no RBIs.
Sheehan records 10 strikeouts
Dodgers starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who returned from the minor leagues, recorded 10 strikeouts to match his personal record. He pitched 5⅔ innings, allowed one run, three hits and one walk. Los Angeles earned its fifth consecutive victory and improved to 87-57.

The Reds opened the scoring in the first inning on Elly De La Cruz's 24th home run of the season. In the fifth inning, Miguel Rojas hit the ball toward third base, and Ke'Bryan Hayes made an inaccurate throw after fielding it. This allowed Teoscar Hernández and Alex Call to score one run each.

Eugenio Suárez cut Cincinnati's deficit with a home run in the seventh inning, his 22nd of the season. The Reds scored another run in the eighth inning, but the Dodgers responded with Will Smith's sacrifice fly. Los Angeles pitcher Evan Phillips pitched a perfect ninth inning and earned his first save of the season.
