Jeff Bezos Was Offered a Stake in Liverpool – Sky News
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been invited to join a group of investors that is in talks to acquire a minority stake in the English soccer club Liverpool. The discussion centers on the possibility of bringing the billionaire on board as a club owner.
According to the publication, Bezos has held talks about joining a group of investors led by Amit Bhatiya, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. According to a source, Bezos is currently unsure whether he should invest in the club.
According to the American magazine Forbes, Bezos’s net worth is nearly $257 billion, making him the fourth-richest person in the world. He had previously considered offers to acquire two NFL teams, the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, but ultimately did not close any deals.
“If Bezos does decide to invest in Liverpool, it would still be an unexpected move,” the publication notes.
The club is currently owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), led by American John Henry. The Financial Times first reported on Tuesday about negotiations between the Bhatia consortium and FSG, in which the club is valued at at least $6 billion.
Earlier this week, Bhatiya relinquished control of his stake in Queens Park Rangers, which plays in the English Championship, to pave the way for a potential investment in Liverpool. Initially, Bhattia expects to finalize the purchase of a 30% stake in the club.
“It is unclear whether the acquisition of a ‘strategic minority stake’ will pave the way for a long-term change in control of the club, although analysts have long speculated that FSG will eventually seek a full sale of the club,” Sky News adds.
As a reminder, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) have classified the World Cup semifinal match between England and Argentina as a high-risk game.
Argentina could face sanctions following its celebration of the victory over England.
