Jenna Forrester sets Australian record in 400m medley — ABC News Australia

Australian swimmer Jenna Forrester won gold in the 400m individual medley at the Australian Short Course Swimming Championships in Sydney and set a national record. Her time of 4 minutes 28.39 seconds was 0.33 seconds faster than the previous mark held by Ellen Fullerton for 17 years, ABC News Australia reports.

The 23-year-old Forrester's time was also below the qualifying standard for the World Short Course Swimming Championships, which will be held in Beijing from December 1 to 6. Before the 400m individual medley, she competed in the 200m backstroke, where she finished second behind Iona Anderson. Both athletes recorded times that met the qualifying standard.

Record after two races

Forrester said the record time came as a surprise to her, as she arrived at the competition without particular expectations. The swimmer also noted that she does not have extensive experience competing in short-course events and that taking part in two disciplines in one evening was difficult.

In 2026, Forrester won three individual gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow — in the 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley. She also won bronze in the 400m freestyle and silver in the 400m individual medley at the Pan Pacs meet in California.

Victories for Southam and Wunsch

Flynn Southam won the men's 100m freestyle in 45.61 seconds. He finished 0.45 seconds ahead of Ed Sommerville. Southam skipped the 200m freestyle on the first day of competition to focus on the shorter distance.

In the women's 100m freestyle, Olivia Wunsch set a personal best of 51.72 seconds. She finished 1.46 seconds ahead of Lani Pallister. In the men's multi-class 50m freestyle, two-time Paralympic champion Rowan Crothers equalled the national record and defeated Alex Tuckwell.
