Elina Svitolina suffered an unexpected defeat in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Berlin
Ukraine’s top-ranked tennis player, Elina Svitolina, has concluded her run at the WTA 500 grass-court tournament (German Open) in the German capital. In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainian tennis player, who was seeded sixth, suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of 21-year-old Alexandra Eala of the Philippines.
The match on the Steffi Graf courts lasted just over an hour and a half and ended in two sets in favor of the younger opponent.
The Filipino player, who had knocked out world No. 2 Alena Rybakina from the tournament the day before, seized the initiative from the start of the match and took a 3-0 lead. Despite Svitolina’s attempts to get back into the match and break back, Eala coolly took the first set 6–3. In the second set, Eala again took the lead with a break, securing a comfortable 5–2 advantage. Elina showed grit, saved one break point, and narrowed the gap to 4–5, but in the decisive tenth game, Alexandra was able to convert the match point on her own serve. In the semifinals, the Ukrainian’s opponent will face Czech tennis player Linda Nosková.
